Today I was thinking about the human civilization on the universal scale. After little search I found that, their are many types of civilization which we will discuss about. I was really fascinated by knowing their types and basis on which they are differentiated and the interesting thing is that we (humans) are not in any of that civilization category. They are differentiated by a scale named ‘Kardashev scale’. It is a scale which determines the type of civilization on the basis of it’s energy consumption by that civilization.
There are basically 3 types of civilization:
Type I Civilization: It is a civilization which basically can harness all the energy available on their planet including the solar power reaching to their planet by their parent or neighboring star. For example the total energy reaching to Earth is 1.74×1024 erg/sec (1.74×1017 watts). But Earth can only use approximately 4×1019 erg/sec (4×1012 watts). It represents that the Earth is lacking by the order of 5 in energy consumption for being a Type I Civilization.
Type II Civilization: It is a civilization where the energy of the whole star can be harnessed for their energy needs. It can be achieved by using a kind of Dyson Sphere which we can install all around our parent star (Sun) and it’s all energy can be directed to only one side of it. Which than we can catch on Earth and use for our needs. The energy requirement of this civilization could be approximately 4×1033 erg/sec (4×1026 watts). This civilization has also the capability to colonize it’s own Solar System.
Type III Civilization: it is a most advanced civilization theorized so far. It has all the capabilities of inter-galactic journey. The outer space journey of this civilization is kind of going out of station for some time. May be it could be a civilization which makes it’s home in a Space Satellite or a Space Ship. The energy consumption of this civilization is theorized to be approximately 4×1044 erg/sec (4×1037 watts). Which they can fulfill by the stars of different solar systems in their galaxy or beyond. May be they could harness of energy of even black hole who knows. As there is a super massive black hole with enormous amount of energy in center of each Spiral galaxy.
Kardashev believed that a Type 4 civilization was impossible.
May be their would be other after technical evolution as Cyborgs or Singularity AI.
Earth is at Type 0 for now.

This formula was defined to know the current status of any civilization. It is derived from the figures required to be a civilization of it’s Type.
K = (log10 P – 6) / 10
where P is the power used by the civilization (in watts) and K is the number for the Type of civilization and how far is it from being the next Type of civilization.
This is the formula which proves the humans to be a Type 0 Civilization.
